Larry Houchin Sportsmanship Award

Larry Houchin was a 1967 graduate of College High School in Bartlesville.  He was a good athlete and played multi-sports during his high school career.  He took great pride in being from Bartlesville and always wanted to be considered a good “team mate”.  Although he lived in Tulsa his entire adult life Larry was asked to be on the first Board of Directors of the Bartlesville Sports Commission.  He had a big vision for the BSC and was very helpful in the formative years of this organization.  Larry died unexpectedly in February of 2011.

The BSC Board decided to dedicate a scholarship in Larry’s name and memory.  With his wonderful attitude and strong conviction to team work the scholarship was named “The Larry Houchin Sportsmanship Award”.  The criteria for this award is as follows:

Grade point average of 3.0 or higher

A graduating senior that has been involved in at least one athletic team his senior year.

Will attend college next year

Involved in extra-curricular activities.

Student athlete who has competed with integrity (including attitude toward officials).

Has shown respect for their opponents

Values fair play

Encourages and roots for their teammates.

Shows responsibility within their team (shows up on time, attends every practice, participates in all team activities off the playing field)

Has an attitude that shows care and concern for all who compete.

When the scholarship began we gave $1,000 per year to one winner. Now we have a male and female winner each year and they receive a $2,500 scholarship.
